Hawaii Standard Deduction
Hawaii's standard deduction for 2026 is $4,400 for single filers and $8,800 for married filing jointly. This is subtracted from gross income before Hawaii's tax brackets are applied. Note: the state deduction is separate from and much smaller than the federal standard deduction of $16,100.
Retirement Income in Hawaii
Hawaii offers a partial exclusion for pension and retirement income. Some retirement income may be exempt or receive preferential treatment depending on the source and amount. Hawaii does not tax Social Security benefits. Distributions from employer pension plans that were funded by employer contributions may qualify for a partial exclusion. Private pensions, 401(k), and IRA distributions are generally taxable. Verify 2026 exclusion rules.
